Help with ShotTrail for iPhone and Apple Watch

Email support@shottrail.com. ShotTrail is made by one person, so an answer usually takes a couple of days rather than an hour — but every message is read and answered by the person who wrote the app.

Reporting a problem

Four things make a bug fixable on the first reply:

  • Your version and build number — in the app under Settings ▸ About.
  • Your iPhone model and iOS version, and your Apple Watch model if the problem is on the watch.
  • What you did, and what happened instead. "The shot landed on the wrong hole" beats "the app is broken".
  • A screenshot, if there is something to see.

If it involves a specific round, say which course and which hole. Please don't send a backup file unless we ask — it contains every position you have ever logged.

The guide is in the app

ShotTrail's full manual lives inside the app, so it works on the course with no signal: Settings ▸ About ▸ Guide. It covers every screen, every setting and every rule the shot suggestions follow. Most questions are answered there faster than by email.

Common questions

How much does ShotTrail cost?

The app is free, and your first 10 rounds are free. After that, starting a new round needs a one-time purchase called Unlimited Rounds. Pay once — there is no subscription and nothing renews — and it covers every device signed in to your Apple Account. Rounds you have already saved are never locked, hidden or deleted, whether you buy or not, and every other feature works the same either way.

I bought Unlimited Rounds but it's asking again

Open Settings ▸ Unlimited Rounds and tap Restore Purchases. That re-checks your purchase with Apple and unlocks it again — this is what to do on a new phone, or after reinstalling. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it with.

How do I move my rounds to a new iPhone?

Restore from a backup file. ShotTrail keeps your rounds on your device rather than on a server, so they do not appear on a new phone by themselves.

  • ShotTrail automatically writes a backup to your iCloud Drive after each round (Files ▸ iCloud Drive ▸ ShotTrail ▸ Backups). Because that folder is in iCloud rather than inside the app, it survives the app being deleted.
  • On the new phone, install ShotTrail and use Settings ▸ Backup & Restore to restore the most recent file.
  • Before you wipe or trade in the old phone, open Settings ▸ Backup & Restore and check that a recent backup is there.

Why does ShotTrail want location "Always"?

So a shot's position is right. During a round your phone is in your pocket with the screen off, and ShotTrail needs to already know where you are the instant you log a shot — asking for a fresh GPS fix at that moment takes up to half a minute and would put your shot in the wrong place. Tracking runs only while a round is in progress, and stops when the round ends. Your positions stay on your device.

Shots are landing on the wrong hole

That is almost always a missing Done at the last green: the hole was never closed, so later shots are still being filed under it. You can fix it after the fact — the logged shot list on the round screen lets you add a missed shot, delete one, move one on the map, close a hole you forgot to close, and go back to the previous hole. The Guide's section on correcting a round walks through each case.

My course isn't in ShotTrail

Three ways in, in increasing order of effort. Import it from OpenStreetMap if it is mapped. If it isn't, just play — ShotTrail can build the course from the rounds you have already played on it, using where you actually teed off and holed out. Or enter the holes by hand. The Guide covers all three, including how to add your course to OpenStreetMap so that every golfer who plays it benefits.

Does ShotTrail work without a signal?

Yes. GPS does not need a mobile signal, and everything is stored on the device. Only weather and importing a new course need a connection — a round played out of coverage records normally and fills in its weather afterwards.

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No — the iPhone app is complete on its own. The watch app is a remote for it: log a shot, check the hole, see the suggested club without taking the phone out. The phone is always in charge of the round.

How do I delete my data?

Delete individual rounds inside the app, or delete the app to remove everything it stores on your iPhone. Backups live in your own iCloud Drive and can be deleted in the Files app. There is nothing held on a server to ask us to erase — see the privacy policy.

Feature requests

Very welcome, and they do get built. Send them to support@shottrail.com and describe the situation on the course rather than the feature — knowing the problem usually produces a better answer than the one that was asked for.
