Privacy Policy

This policy explains exactly what ShotTrail records, where it is kept, and the few cases where your device contacts an outside service. It covers the ShotTrail iPhone app and its Apple Watch companion.

Who is responsible

ShotTrail is published by Maitreya AB (org. nr 556799-2655), a limited company registered in Sweden, which is the data controller for the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You can reach us at support@shottrail.com.

What ShotTrail records, and where it is kept

Everything below is stored on your device, in the app's own private storage. It is not transmitted to us at any point.

• Your location during a round. While a round is running, ShotTrail tracks your position continuously — including while your phone is locked and in your pocket — so that the moment you log a shot, its position is already known rather than needing a fresh GPS fix. Each logged shot stores the coordinate and time it happened. Tracking runs only during a round and stops when the round ends.
• Your rounds and your golf. Scores, clubs, places, penalties, notes, courses and the settings you choose.
• Apple Watch motion, if you use the Watch app. Movement is read on the watch to detect a golf swing. It is analysed on the watch as it arrives and is not kept as a recording.

When your device contacts an outside service

There are two, and in both cases your device talks to them directly. Neither request carries your name, your email, an account, a device identifier or an advertising ID. Like every request to every website, each one does carry your device's IP address — that is how the answer finds its way back — and the service on the other end sees it. We do not: the reply goes to your phone, not through us.

Weather (Open-Meteo)

To show the wind and conditions for a round, your device sends the round's coordinates and the date to Open-Meteo and receives the weather back. Nothing else is sent, and the answer is stored only on your phone. Open-Meteo is run by OpenMeteo GmbH in Switzerland, whose terms state that it keeps webserver logs which may contain the coordinates and deletes them after 90 days. Those logs are theirs, not ours — we have no account with them and no way to see or retrieve anything. See Open-Meteo's terms and privacy notice.

Golf course data (OpenStreetMap / Overpass)

When you search for a golf course to import, your device sends a coordinate and a search radius to the Overpass API and receives the matching courses back. The request identifies the app, not you. This happens only when you actively search for or refresh a course — never in the background, and never during a round.

The public endpoint we query is overpass-api.de, maintained by the volunteer Overpass API project on servers funded by FOSSGIS e.V., the German OpenStreetMap chapter. It is not operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, and it publishes no privacy policy of its own — so we will not tell you what it does or does not keep, because we do not know. What we can tell you is what leaves your phone: one coordinate, one radius, and the name of the app.

Your photos

If you turn on round photos, ShotTrail asks for access to your photo library so it can find the pictures you took while you were playing, and show them with the round.

• Your photos are never copied and never uploaded. ShotTrail stores only a reference to each photo, plus the time, location and camera direction it records. Delete a photo from your library and it disappears from ShotTrail too.
• ShotTrail never writes to your photo library and never adds, changes or deletes anything in it.
• One deliberate exception. Pictures you attach to a course yourself — a scorecard, a course map, a tee sign — are copied into ShotTrail's own storage, so that they stay put when you tidy up your photo library.

Apple Health

If you turn on Save Rounds to Apple Health, ShotTrail writes each finished round to Health as a Golf workout — its start and end time, the distance walked, and a map of the round drawn from your logged shots. It also reads Health to check whether that round was already saved, so the same round never appears twice.

Health data belongs to you and stays under Apple's protection on your device and in your iCloud. We never receive it, and ShotTrail never uses Health data for advertising or shares it with anyone. The feature is off until you switch it on, and iOS asks your permission separately.

iCloud

ShotTrail saves a backup of your data to your own iCloud Drive, in a ShotTrail folder you can open in the Files app, so a round survives you deleting the app by mistake. Course images and diagnostic files are kept in the same place. This is your iCloud account, under your Apple Account — we have no access to it. You can turn automatic backups off in the app, and delete the folder at any time.

Your Apple Watch

The Watch app is a remote control for the phone. Round information travels directly between your watch and your phone over Apple's device-to-device connection. It does not pass through us.

Purchases

ShotTrail's one purchase — Unlimited Rounds — is handled entirely by Apple. We never see or receive your payment details. Whether you have bought it is confirmed by Apple on your device. Apple provides us with sales reports that do not identify individual customers. See Apple's privacy policy.

What we do not do

• No accounts, no sign-in, no password — the app never asks for an email address.
• No analytics, no usage tracking, no advertising and no advertising identifiers.
• No third-party trackers or advertising SDKs — the app contains no third-party code at all.
• Your data is never sold, rented or shared. There is no one to share it with.

If you have chosen to share analytics and crash reports with developers in iOS Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Analytics & Improvements, Apple may pass us crash reports for ShotTrail. These come from Apple, are used only to fix crashes, and do not identify you. You can turn that off in iOS at any time.

If you write to us

The app asks for no email address and sends us nothing. Writing to us is different: if you email support@shottrail.com — for support, or to ask for a place in the TestFlight beta — we hold your message and the address it came from, for as long as it takes to deal with it and no longer. A beta request becomes a TestFlight invitation, which is how Apple delivers test builds; what Apple does with it is covered by Apple's privacy policy. We do not add you to a mailing list, because there is no mailing list, and we do not use your address for anything you did not write to us about.

Your rights, and how to use them

Under GDPR you have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict, object to and port your personal data. Because the app keeps it on your device and sends us none of it, these rights are exercised directly on your device rather than by asking us:

• See your data — it's all in the app, on every screen.
• Correct it — rounds, shots, courses and clubs are all editable.
• Export it — Settings ▸ Backup & Restore writes a complete, readable JSON file you can take anywhere.
• Erase it — delete individual rounds in the app, or delete the app to remove everything it stores on the device. Backups in your iCloud Drive are yours to delete in the Files app.
• Withdraw permissions — location, photos and Health can each be revoked in iOS Settings at any time, without uninstalling.

The exception is anything you have sent us by email, above: to see, correct or have that erased — including being taken off the beta — write to support@shottrail.com and it will be done.

If you believe your data has been mishandled you may complain to the Swedish supervisory authority, Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY).

Children

ShotTrail is a golf tracker for a general audience. It is not directed at children, and it knowingly collects no personal information from anyone, of any age.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be published here with a new date at the top. Material changes will also be noted in the app.
